I've just bought a new laptop, so am having to move to Windows 10 from my beloved Windows 7 machine. I hate change! *wailing and gnashing of teeth*
Anyway, I will probably have many questions, but to start with, how do you set the computer to chime or play some sound on start up and shut down? Mine doesn't, and the computer is so quiet that I'd like some verification that it has indeed shut down!
I've tried to look in Sounds, but I can't figure out how to change settings and select anything. Help please!
Oh, I'm using Jaws 16, if that matters... which reminds of another thing that's not quite right. Jaws stutters a little, with the basic Eloquence voice, but not with one of the fancier, humanlike voices. I prefer old Eloquence. Any thoughts on what might be causeing this, and how to solve it?
I have seen this stutter caused by the enhancements included as part of sound drivers. These usually include things like virtual surround and base boost etc. If you want to disable the enhancements to see if it solves your problem, open the Sound dialog by typing sound in the start menu search box and selecting sound in the list box. On the Playback tab, select your speakers and tab to Properties. Once in this dialog, switch to the Enhancements tab. There will be a list of enhancements and a checkbox that says Disable All Enhancements. I would try checking that box to see if it fixes your trouble.
Yes. The sounds are pretty soft too. They play, but there not like Windows 7.
Sound cards make a difference too.
I don't think so, but the start up and shoutdown sounds might be off. They are not by default, but could be.
I'll post how to check that. I've got to take a look.
Here’s an easy way to check or build your own sounds scheme.
Press the windows key. You’ll be in the search box.
Type sounds. Include the s at the end so you will be on Change system sounds. If not arrow to that. Press enter.
Now you’ll hear all about sound schemes. Keep pressing tab until you are in windows. The first is the startup sound. If the box is not checked, check it.
You can make changes to as to how your Windows sounds.
Tab or shift tab until the Windows is open and try your arrow keys.
You go through different things you can change.
You start on the sound with the arrow, to change what it sounds like, you press the tab key, now you have a list of sound.
You can even put your own in some places, but that requires more explaining.
For now, you can check if your startup is on though.
Once you learn it is on tab to okay and you’ll set it.
This is the same as it was in Windows 7.
Good luck.
If you really want to know if your computer is off put your hand by the vent.
Some newere models don't breathe like that anymore.
They are superquiet. Smile.
No, this one doesn't breathe like my old computer, you're right. *smile* Thanks for the quick replies, and such detailed steps. I'll get to working on this later tonight! Thank you!
I do know you can activate the startup sound, but the last I saw there was no shutdown sound any longer. Most windows 10 systems shutdown so fast though that you don't need to worry too much.
hmm, can't get the startup sound to work and i been using win10 for a year now. the only way it works its if i restart lol
yeah, no shut down sound anymore.
To be sure it does shut down if you can't see the light on the screen.
Press and hold the power button for a few seconds. Now you've shut it down.
But if you use the shutdown on the computer, normally if it isn't installing updates, it shuts down.
Also remember. Windows 10 will update on August 2ND. If you can, you'd be better off upgrading to Jaws 17.
You know forgive me if you said. I’m not reading back, so.
You might check to see if your system sounds are up and on, not muted.
Press insert F11 or whatever you use for your Jaws key.
Next go to your speakers, or it might say the name of your sound card. You’ll know it because it will say a percent the volumes on.
Press enter, and enter, again to open volume mixer.
Now tab through all of the different settings and set them as you wish. If something is checked it is muted, so uncheck it.
